The Secret Teachings of Plants: The Intelligence of the Heart in Direct Perception of Nature  Stephen Harrod Buhner : All ancient and indigenous peoples insisted their knowledge of plant medicines came from the plants themselves and not through trial and error experimentation. Less well known is that many Western peoples made this same assertion. There are, in fact, two modes of cognition available to all human beings - the brain-based linear and the heart-based holistic. The heart-centred mode of perception can be exceptionally accurate and detailed in its information gathering capacities if, as indigenous and ancient peoples asserted, the heart's ability as an organ of perception is developed. Steven Harrod Buhner explores this second mode of perception in great detail through the work of numerous remarkable people from Luther Burbank, who cultivated the majority of food plants we now take for granted, to the great German poet and scientist Goethe and his studies of the metamorphosis of plants. Buhner explores the commonalties among these individuals in their approach to learning from the plant world and outlines the specific steps involved.
Also by Stephen Harrod Buhner - Sacred Plant Medicine: Explorations in the Practice of Indigenous Herbalism  in which the author reveals the importance of personal relationships to plant medicines as the foundation of an ecological approach to healing, this book takes readers on a step-by-step journey through the historical relationship that human beings have had with plant medicines during their long evolution on Earth.

Medicinal Plants in Folk Tradition: An Ethnobotany of Britain & Ireland  David E Allen, Gabrielle Hatfield : This book provides the first comprehensive account of medicinal uses of wild plants by the country folk of Britain and Ireland. Two of Britain’s foremost ethnobotanical scholars mined nearly 300 published and unpublished sources, including information gathered by the Irish Folklore Commission in more than 1000 manuscript volumes, to chronicle the fascinating uses of more than 400 plant species.

Memory, Wisdom and Healing: The History of Domestic Plant Medicine  Gabrielle Hatfield : The debt owed to botany by medicine is not commonly appreciated. In the past, medicine relied almost entirely on plants, and even today, many western medicines are plant-derived. Historians have largely neglected domestic medicine in favour of 'official medicine'. Although an impressive amount of information is available in primary sources, both within record offices and in private hands, relatively little has been published on British domestic plant medicine. The author has gathered a wealth of material from manuscripts, letters, diaries and personal interviews. This book brings together this information, using it to produce a vivid and detailed picture of the use of domestioc remedies in Britain from 1700 to the present day. It draws upon oral history and manuscript sources to record for posterity this neglected aspect of our heritage. Much of this has never been published before, and little modern material has been written down, and is in danger of disappearing altogether when the current generation of elderly people dies out. This book is a valuable contribution to the study of the folklore of modern Britain and is a fascinating piece of social history

A-Z entries are preceded by a discussion of treatment approaches for conditions by body system and for special populat

The Practice of Traditional Western Herbalism: Basic Organs and Systems  Matthew Wood : A recent revival of Western Herbalism, along with other systems of natural, traditional and holistic medicine, has brought to light a missing link, namely a system of medicine by which the herbs could be applied to the human body. Herbalism does not fit into modern biomedicine and the original system of medicine has disappeared. In contrast, a background philosophy and system of medicine accompanies homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. Now, this book resuscitates and brings Western Herbalism up to date in relation to the human body.

Evidence-Based Herbal Medicine  Michael Rotblatt, Irwin Ziment : This is a handbook of practical, objective, and clinically oriented information on the use of herbalism in health care.

Dangerous Garden: The Quest for Plants to Change Our Lives  David Stuart : Over the ages humans have sought out plants across the globe for many uses: to heal wounds, cure disease, soothe troubled minds, kindle love or evoke curious dreams. Gardener and botanist David Stuart tells the story of that search, and how the world of plants has interacted with the world of humans in the quest. This is not only a story of soothing balms and heroic cures. Many plants have a dark side to balance the light and most of the really powerful and effective plants are double-edged. They can heal or kill, calm us or enslave us, cure depression or roar us off to meet strange gods and monsters. The relationship between humans and plants is a complex one. Stuart relates amazing tales of how the quest for plants has sparked wars, helped establish international trade routes and generated fortunes.

Healing Threads: Traditional Medicines of the Highlands and Islands  Mary Beith : The Gaelic pharmacy was a rich one, the sources of which lay almost entirely in nature and were subject to the minimum of preparation. Much of the rich store of material comes from the great legacy of medieval Gaelic manuscripts. In more recent times, papers of medical societies have shown how traditional methods and cures are still of value to modern medicine. In addition to a general historical background, which traces the story of Highland folk tradition from earliest times, Mary Beith also describes a whole variety of traditional remedies, cures and practices, from the healing properties of stone and metal, animals and insects, to rituals, charms and incantations. Her book also includes a list of the most commonly used herbs. Clearly written with extensive source notes, Healing Threads is a unique introduction to a subject that has fascinated generation after generation. This is a reprint from Birlinn of the Polygon edition.
